Qatar expels a Saudi human rights activist

Qatar has expelled a Saudi human rights activist, who was traveling to Norway, hoping to receive asylum, an NGO reported on Monday.

“Mohammed al-Otaibi, 49, was voluntarily fleeing to neighboring Qatar in March after being forced to appear before an anti-terrorist tribunal in December on charges related to his militancy,” the Gulf Center for Human Rights (GCHR) said.

On Sunday, al-Otaibi and his wife were forcibly deported to Saudi Arabia as they traveled to Norway, an NGO with offices in Copenhagen and Beirut said.

The GCHR, which is closely following the human rights situation in the Gulf countries, said in a statement that Oslo had agreed to grant the couple travel documents and the right to seek asylum at the time of their arrival.
